Here's another amazing case where A.Y.P.E. cards have returned to their source after nearly 100 years. All were purchased separately on eBay.over a period of two years. All the cards were mailed to either the Rev. or Mrs. E. S. Stackpole,  Bradford, Massachusetts. They were written by “B” or “E B S”. Card 2, indicates that “B” or “E B S” was an actress apparently performing in a supporting role in a Seattle production. The Moore Theater is my best guess.

All have been embossed with the sellers name “Lowman & Hanford S&P Co., Seattle”

Card 1, Fisheries Bldg., PM - May 15,1909

5-13-9, I was particularly interested in what you wrote about the monument by St. Gaudens in the cemetary at Washington. I have seen several pictures of that monument and heard it most highly praised. I did not know about the hedge around it. What did the Priest find to object to in it’s effect? Last night I got a strong additional motive for moving. M (or Mrs. M) was going to charge me a dollar a day for my room during the exposition. I pointed out she could not do that till the 8th of June, when my month runs out. After that I shall have to pay it, but will move soon.

P.S. Everything was most pleasant in my talk with M. Glad I deal with him, tho the money goes to her.

Card 2, The Mines Bldg., PM – May 21, 1909

5-21-9, Play went off well last night, considered great success. Cora Divison said after that she had been doubtful as to whether I would enunciate plainly “as you seldom take the trouble to”. I did however to her satisfaction. That is worth the time and bother I have put into the thing. I did not know that I was noticably lax in this respect. No one would probably have told me under other circumstances. I knew that the drill had improved my voice but did not know that the improvement was needed for ordinary talk.   B

Card 3, Band Stand and Forestry Bldg. PM – May 25, 1909

5-25-9, Sunday I went to Victoria by a new route, thru Deception Pass and around Lopez Island. On the water 15 hours. Had a fine time all by myself. Came back happy but burnt like a lobster. Stevens is going to the Univ. of Chicago to take the “Summer Quarter” in the medical school. He thinks that having had some medical work, he can finish the medical course in five quarters. As a psychologist he wants to know medicine.

Card 4, South Entrance, Agricultural Bldg. PM – Sep 29, 1909

Have read Upton Sinclair’s scheme for a boy’s colony. About the most sensible plan for bringing up youngsters that I have happened on. 9-29-0, E B S    Taft at the Fair tomorrow. There may be several persons there to see him.

Card 5, Untitled, End of Agricultural Bldg. Machinery Hall in distance, PM – Oct 1, 1909

I am sending you De Morgan’s “Alice-for-Short” a book that I much liked a while ago. I fear it will not get to you on the 17th . I tried to get “Margharitas Soul” which had been coming serially in the “American” but found that it is not yet out in book form. Any way,  mille anni Pelice.
